Current evolution in drugs and health care allowed people to live much longer. Living to 70 or 75 is nothing extraordinary these days, and even more people manage to celebrate their 100th birthday. There is no single key to longevity, however. Long-livers usually have other people who lived a long life in their family. They also stick to a certain lifestyle, like exercise or work during retirement. Long-livers always take activities, physical, mental, or both. It does not mean that they work hard to keep fit. They just get more social and involved in their community than passive aged people.
Keeping one’s mind sharp is a great workout for the elderly. There are many long-livers among teachers who do not rush to retire. Mental activity protects existing connections between neurons, which is also a prevention of dementia. Even simple crosswords and puzzles help the elderly live a longer and more fulfilling life. Considerable attention is also paid to the diet. On the wrong side of 60, many people reconsider their eating habits. Instead of fast food and fatty meals, they choose dairy products, fish, vegetables, and cereals. These products give enough energy and protect the elderly from heart conditions.
